Tuesday, February 15, 2022 Staying Safe in today's world: Spams & Fraud Speaker: St. Croix County Judge Michael Waterman 1:00 PM via Zoom If you were unable to join the ZOOM meeting, you missed an excellent presentation. Please read below for a re-cap of the information presented by Judge Waterman.
Judge Waterman provided some wonderful "stories" of past fraud - Did you know George C. Parker actually sold the Brooklyn Bridge (several times) as well as Central Park? Talk about fraud! The point of the examples was to demonstrate scams and fraud have been around for centuries and still exist. We live in a very safe community BUT, there are still people who make a living stealing from vulnerable people; and there are new ways to contact people through emails, text messages, phone calls and electronic platforms (Facebook Marketplace, ebay, etsy etc.)
His advice: IF IT LOOKS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS. If you think the call from Social Security or a bank or some other legitimate entity, telling you there is a problem is real, DON'T SEND MONEY OR GIVE ANY INFORMATION. SImply disengage and call the place. They will verify that it is a scam and may help find the criminals!
Sending a check in the mail to pay a bill is fine, but placing the envelope in your mailbox and putting up the RED FLAG is an invitation to thieves.. You may not know the check was stolen until you're notified that your account is overdue.
If you are a Facebook follower, beware of scams that are hidden in "games" that can be played. If questions are asked about personal information - stop! Don't go any further .
Do not ever agree to send money or gift cards when someone asks for help.. (grandma, I'm in trouble and need you to send...)
If you "meet" someone via the internet and that person "befriends" you - take care. Unfortunately, he/she may be a scam artist who is very skillful at winning your trust. They love to play on your kindness.
Types of crime in our community:
Check fraud
Breaking into a car when you leave your purse - just to go into a store for a minute.
Selling stolen property on-line for a much discounted price.
Financial fraud - taking advantage of elderly folks in assisted living communities - "GREAT INVESTMENT - YOUR MONEY WILL BE SAFE," and I'll send monthly reports so you can track your earnings. Don't invest in that scam.
For sale by owner (and here's the picture) - just send a deposit and when I deliver the item, you can pay the rest. Your DEPOSIT is gone and so is the scam artist.
Email scams - CHECK for the following: poor grammar; the email domain is wrong, misspelled words or phrases that don't make sense.
The biggest thing we can all do is to ask MANY QUESTIONS. We are lucky to have law enforcement who will help. If you think you are being victimized, call the police as soon as it happens.
Take care of yourself - don't become a target or victim.

Tuesday, March 15, 2022 "Grand Fête Cooking Class" Speaker/Host: Kay Timm, owner 6:00 - 7:30 PM ~ at Grand Fête 512 Second Street, Hudson
What a fabulous event learning how to make CHARCUTERIE BOARDS! Although there were space limitations, and only 20 members were able to attend, it seemed like there was fun for 120! After sharing clever techniques and creative ideas, "chef" Jessica challenged us, in groups, to create our own Charcuterie boards. At the end, a winner was announced!!!
The 2 top photos are of HWC members listening and learning from "Chef" Jessica as she explained and demonstrated the ease and fun of putting together a Charcuterie Board. The bottom 4 photos are the Charcuterie boards created by HWC members. WOW! As you can see, they were all wonderful, but the one on the lower right was deemed THE WINNER!
